Shibam used to be one of the most important commercial centres in Hahramout valley.

It is always associated with its high buildings and its traditional architecture.

This semi-field historical study attempts penetrating into the depth of the social life in this city focusing on what might be described as the market culture and the rule of brokers in it.

Modern historical studies on Hadhramout concentrated on the political aspects.

Social historical studies are still scarce due to the difficulty in tracing information about the social life in the historical references.

Brokers in Shibam played a dual rule.

In addition to their commercial rule (facilitating buying and selling for others) they interfered in the contradictions of the tribal community of the tribes that lived around Shibam.

This dual rule along with other factors created the brokers' phenomena in Shibam.

There are different descriptions for this phenomena and the society has different attitudes towards it.
