In the 20th century, color has gained a major significance as it became an independent science that has its own scientific and applied theories, as well as its functional and aesthetic implications.

This was reflected on architecture where postmodern architecture has a special color-wise rich product all over the world.

In order to guarantee the positive effect of colors, there must be experience with the properties of color, since the lack of knowledge could cause a random architectural image that might be negatively received by the recipients.

This paper, in its theoretical frame, presents the symbolism and mechanism of using color in architecture, an overview of the literature related to it, and forms of color harmony that could be applied in facades in order to provide a positive effect.

In the practical frame, this paper documents and analyzes the color experience in Wadi Hadhramout, pointing out the different aspects of using color.

It also provides suggestions to specify a set of color-options for each architectural area by architects and specialists with the aim of having a beautiful urban image and preventing visual pollution that might arise from the lack of knowledge and experience of color and its properties2
