This study seeks to show the importance of lexical knowledge in language proficiency and use, because the majority of researchers in the field of linguistics, both theoretical and applied, interested in grammatical knowledge only; with the marginalization of the role of lexical knowledge and make it in a second position.

But this view of inferiority will be abandoned in recent decades by the researchers, who indicated the role of lexical knowledge in learner language proficiency( second language or foreign language).

Thus, we will show the role of vocabulary knowledge in the learner’s language competence and use, its stages of process and related concepts (lexical ability, lexical competence, receptive and productive vocabulary), the role of memory in its acquisition and teaching methods.
