Image compression technology takes an important place in actual technology systems, especially in biometric systems that rely on biometric images and data.

Actually and because the large amounts of information and images used in this field, specialists resorted to using biometric image compression techniques to reduce this amount of stored data.

In this paper, to improve the compression quality of biometric images, we proposed the use edges evaluation and their degradation under compression.

We have also calculate a full-reference edges image quality based on edge detection techniques.

We have used as comparative the most used quality index in this field; the PSNR and the MS-SSIM.

To complete the analysis of our results, we proposed the use from literature of a quality image that evaluate the texture degradation in compressed images.

To achieve the main objective of our contribution, we investigate in the use of JPEG, JPEG2000 and WSQ compression algorithms compared to a two second-generation wavelet-based technique associated to the SPIHT encoder.

The obtained results allowed us to understand the degradation of these images under compression.
