Study objectives: Study aims to explore decision makers’ chances in bringing refugee crisis under control by means of analyzing social media platforms being an open source of information (Who are they? What do they say? - Their locations - Their languages - Frequently used words - Who are the influential persons around them.

Study also aims to explore the ability to address extremism in a proactive manner besides the launch of awareness campaigns which proactively target refugees or those around them, a matter that requires identifying the most influential persons or entities within their real and virtual communities.

Study further explores the opportunities of crowdsourcing.

Study Method and tool: the study is based on case studies, using Social Networks Analysis Tool NodeXL, an extension of Microsoft Excel, for the extraction of data from social media sites and for data visualization.

Study finding: Decision makers have a good chance to alleviate the adverse security impacts of refugee movement in the region.

This can be achieved by making use of advanced analysis tools in addressing the crisis in a more professional manner.

Analysis of data generated on social media can also help identify users as well as refugee - related networks making it easier for concerned authorities to target groups and individuals most likely to be influential.

Study contribution: according to study, decision makers have great chances in addressing crises in general and refugee crisis in particular by means of using analysis tools which provide a vast amount of accurate and real time information.
