Inspired by Baghdad disaster which represented a real poetic event, Shamsuddin Al-Koofy was well-known of composing elegiac poems.

Baghdad elegiac poems showed two types of 'the other', viz.

'the other foe' and 'the other friend' upon, which duality of communication and separation were based according to the relationship between the poetic ego and 'the other'.

This relationship gave a complete vision of 'the other' with highly aesthetic performance characterized by simplicity with depth, clarity with perfection, and appearance with effect.

It also comprehended the recipient's mentality and inclinations and the other's manners, stances, and attitudes.
