Until the middle of the twentieth century, Ras-al-Khaimah, like the other Emirates, lacked basic infrastructure.

For the first part of the century, the financial resources of the Emirate were quite limited, and the British authorities, which controlled the Gulf region for more than two ccnturies, left the area underdeveloped and lacking in even basic public services.

During the second half of the twentieth century, and using both its own limited resources as well as assistance from neighboring countries such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Ras-al-Khaimah began to plant the seeds of modern development.

This paper explores Ras-al-Khaimah's efforts to build a modem infrastructure, and also examines its efforts to diversify its economy.

Included is a discussion of Ras-al-Khamaih's plans for the future ■
