The decline in the financial performance of private universities as a result of the economic conditions led to a decrease in their market value.

Therefore, universities sought to raise performance rates through a set of measures to attract students, which led to an increase in competition in this important educational sector.

Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of the intensity of competition between the private universities listed on Amman Stock Exchange, which numbered four universities, on performance for the years 2016- 2019.

The study analyzed the trend using four financial ratios derived from the financial statement from Amman Stock Exchange website, which are: net profit to revenue, return on assets, return on shareholders' equity and earning per share.

Then, the mean was extracted to compare the performance of the universities with each other.

The study found several results, but the most prominent one showed that the competition factor as a result of the change in the number of students had contradictory effects among universities.

However, the results showed a general decline in the performance of universities.

The study recommended working more efficiently to utilize universities' resources to achieve better returns.

It also recommended using other indicators for further analysis of the university’s performance.
