Ali Shariati was able to present a critical view of many social phenomena in Islam and presented new ideas and perceptions that constitute a new knowledge building in the form of a regenerative reform project by dealing with the traditions, constants and issues contained in traditional thought in Islam in an attempt to heal the rift and alienation resulting from development and modernization.

Shariati transcended the doctrinal affiliation complex through believing in Islam as the essence of the Qur'an / spiritual.

His scientific approach, which he adopted as a sociological researcher, provided him with the opportunity to objectively and impartial reading of religious ideas and beliefs, which helped him to present a distinct reading of Islam with its historical and spiritual dimensions.

In his critical reform project, Shariati faced two contradictory fronts.

The first was represented by the religious establishment / clerics who had launched campaigning campaigns against him and the political establishment / ruling authority where he was arrested and imprisoned.

Shariati based his critical view of the Islamic society and the backwardness and weakness that the intellectual can offer in terms of the social role and responsibility entrusted to the intellectuals and the educated, raising the slogan of returning to oneself, and on which he built his reform and critical project in general.
