In this research, we seek to consolidate a central and pivotal term in the modern linguistic lesson; the term of the "index".

There is no doubt that Tammam Hassan in establishing the foundations of his great theory - the theory of the collaboration of indexes - was based on a long historical background, at the same time he drew from the spring of modern language lesson.

Therefore, the term index was not strange to the Arabic linguistic heritage; it was a common term and widely used in the Arabic language environment.
