Intrauterine contraceptive device and low backache

Objective : To investigate the relation between intrauterine contraceptive devices and low back pain.

Methods: One thousand and forty women in the childbearing age having the intrauterine contraceptive device inside the uterus, were interviewed History was taken focusing on backache and its possible causes.

A control group of (800) women who had never used intrauterine contraceptive device insertion were interviewed All chosen subjects were visiting Queen Alia Hospital, Princess Aisha Medical clinics, and Soldiers Family Caring Center in Zarka.

Results: One thousand andforty cases of loop insertion were followed.

About 44 % (460 cases) of them complained of low backache.

The same result in the control group (42 %) was found In intrauterine contraceptive device users with history of low backache 35 % had history of pain before insertion and in 38 % pain persisted after its removal In 40 % pain was present only with loop inside uterus and in almost all of them another cause could be found which is neurogenic, muscular or bony in origin.

Conclusion: Intrauterine contraceptive device is not a cause of low backache and it has to be treated according to the underlying cause.
