Sustainable urban planning for the urban environment in historical areas case study (Historic Cairo)

Heritage is not constant; it evolves and changes over time.

Historical cities face a conflict between development and the preservation of identity, where the preservation of the neutrality of historical cities and their valuable buildings has become a complex challenge, especially in the face of urban development, high population density, lack of infrastructure, and technological development.

The research aims to develop mechanisms for the preservation of historical cities through the development of sustainable urban planning of its urban surroundings, particularly in the historical city of Cairo due to its complex fabric and heterogeneous with its urban surroundings.

This research adopts a number of scientific methodologies, First descriptive approach which discusses theoretical studies, and basic principles relating to the research such as (sustainable urban design - historical cities - etc.

), second analytical approach the research evaluated and assessed a number of historical cities that have been developed in order to determine the comparability of these experiences with the axes of sustainable urban planning.

Finally a practical approach that identifies the most major challenges to historic Cairo conservation, and suggest a framework for conservation of historical cities in general specifically historical Cairo through urban development.

The study concludes with the criteria for the development of urban environment for historical cities' through sustainable urban planning and technological variables.

So we can accept what appropriate for Historical Cairo conservation and its urban environment.

Research problem:
Preservation of historical cities and their urban surroundings has become necessary to preserve historical cities identity, particularly in our Arab cities, which they face major challenges in preserving our culture and history, they also face the ignoring the role of sustainable planning in preserving historical cities and preserving of value buildings, which must be expanded to include the surroundings of historical cities.

Historical cities suffer from a lack of development in their urban surroundings and the value buildings conservation.

Research objectives
The research aims to develop a framework for sustainable urban planning in historical cities, especially in Cairo historical city, and discuss the standards objective for conservation in historical cities according to its urban environment.
