This scientific paper seeks to highlight the motives of the Mamluks and the Ottomans to expand on the Red Sea coast, while explaining how they seized Swakin in the year 1517, the same year in which they took over Egypt.

So when Muhammad Ali’s conquests progressed in Sudan, he rented Suakin and Massawa from the Ottomans so that he could link Egypt to his conquests in Sudan.

The importance of the research is to inform the reader with some historical documented information about the nature of the Mamluk relationship with Egypt across the Red Sea coast for its economic importance and its distinctive location that pushed the Mamluk and Ottoman states to take care of them along with investigation and scrutiny in historical documents to reach the facts related to the Ottoman ambitions on Sudanese ports, The importance of this scientific paper also lies in clarifying the facts about the situation of Sudan at that time in terms of indirect dependence on the Ottoman authority to exclude the claim of Egypt’s right to Sudan historically.

The study followed the method of narration and analysis to reach the goal and reach results, the most important of which was to demonstrate the lack of legal rights for Egypt in Sudan and that the Ottoman encroachment on the Red Sea coasts expresses Egypt’s desire to exploit Sudan’s resources until the appropriate political environment is available for economic colonization.

The paper has two axes, the first is to get acquainted with each of the Mamluk and Ottoman states, and the second is to highlight the competition between them over the Sudanese ports, then the conclusion, results, recommendations, and a list of sources and references.
