The Agriculture sector is one of the most leading sectors in Syria, where it contributes with about 25% of the total GDP and the Agricultural exports contribute at rates ranging from 13% to 32% of the total Syrian exports.

Furthermore, the Agriculture sector is the sector upon which the citizens food security for and industry raw materials primarily depend on.

Also it contributes to the improvement of the trade balance and in the availability of foreign exchange to finance imports of other sectors.

(The National Information Center in Syria) The research problem is the extravagant use of water in the Agriculture sector, and in the use of traditional irrigation with low efficiency of irrigation water use, as well as the low production per hectare irrigated via traditional methods compared to their counterparts irrigated via modern methods.

The use of traditional irrigation methods increases the water losses thus reducing the ability to reclaim new land and consequently reducing the food security level.

The research goal in general is recognizing the production efficiency of the field irrigation water use for various major strategic crops field irrigation systems in Syria which is considered one of the most water consuming crops.

In order to reach the most important recommendations and suggestions that can to a great extent contribute in increasing the irrigation water use efficiency and reducing the water losses.

The research, to achieve its objectives, depended on published and unpublished secondary data issued by several Syrian government agencies such as the Ministry of Agriculture and the Center for Agricultural Policy.

The research has come to many important findings concerning the effectiveness and efficiency of modern irrigation techniques used in irrigating the above-mentioned four crops.

As per its important role in rationalizing the water use and achieving significant water resources savings as well as increasing the productivity per hectare of each of those crops.

Along with its contribution in increasing the production and revenues if they were to convert the entire cultivated area to modern irrigation means.

The results also illustrated the importance of the conversion to modern irrigation methods achieving tremendous positive outputs in the Agriculture sector towards further progress and prosperity, in addition to achieving high rates of farm incomes which can contribute to the sustainable agricultural development process and attaining a large surplus in production, subsequently raising the national economy in general.
