The corona virus disease (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is also known as the COVID-19 virus.

After the first ever reports of COVID-19 in December 2019, the disease spread rapidly.

In January 2020, the WHO declared the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, and by March 2020, the WHO characterized the outbreak as a global pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus.

One of the most widely used methods for detecting the virus is a nuclear-derived technique called reverse transcription – polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Real time RT– PCR is one of the most widely used laboratory methods for detecting the COVID-19 virus.

Over 100 countries requested support from the IAEA in detecting and controlling the increasing number of COVID-19 infections, including with real time RT–PCR diagnosis techinique.

The IAEA, in part through funding contributions from Member States, provided a range of support, from diagnostic equipment and protective gear to share its expertise and training.
