This study traced the novel The Smell of Coal by the Saudi writer Abdulaziz Al-Saqabi, and sought to deal with it applying the psychological approach, according to what was presented by some studies in the field of psychology and its theories.

The study was divided into an introduction and two sections, the first section was concerned with the positive psychological dimensions, whereas the second section was concerned with the negative psychological dimensions of the characters of the novel.

The study concluded that The Smell of Coal is a creative work.

The narrator relied on the psychological dimensions of the characters of the novel.

These dimensions have varied between many feelings and emotions.

The novel included many feelings, emotions, and psychological behaviors, which confirms that its characters are represented by the clear diversity and plurality; a diversity associated with the events of the novel that contributes to the arrangement of facts in a way that ensures the construction of the novel in an integrated building.

The multiple psychological dimensions, included fear, sadness, love, curiosity, depression, and melancholy.

The appearance of some psychological dimensions in the novel was limited to one character, such as revenge, depression and melancholy which appeared in the character of Saeed's uncle.
