Praise be to Allaah, and peace and blessings upon the Prophet of Allaah, and his relatives and companions in general.

Some scholars of Usuul have discussed the derivation of the science of Usuul Al-Fiqh from other sciences, and that Al-Imam Ash-Shaafi'i was the first to author on this field.

Hence, I deem it important to appraise the sources from which he derived his book “Ar-Risaalah”, and it became apparent to me after an extrapolation that he drew from seven sources: (The Qur'an, the Sunnah, the Arabic language, nature and reasoning, and the understanding of the pious predecessors and their approach, and the legal rulings and the jurisprudential submissions), and that indeed Al-Imam Ash-Shaafi'i would either benefit from the express content of these sources or from what he juristically derived from them, and among these sources are those that are primary, from which maxims emanate, while some are not independent in making maxims, but they only reveal them, and each source contain a number of proofs that Al-Imam Ash-Shaafi'i actually benefitted from it.
