the Book of al-Dībāj by the philologist and literary anthologist Abū ʿUbayda Maʿmar b.

al-Muthannā (728-d.

c.825), which was annotated by Aljurbūʿ and Alʿuthaymīn, is regarded as a major source for rare and unusual anecdotes about pre-Islamic and early Islamic history of Arabs.

It contains more than 70 anecdotes, most of which are problematic and require investigation.

thus, it is proposed in this study to answer the following questions : what are the concerns regarding annotation of the edition? what are the types and causes of problems in the anecdotes and their implication on the narrative? and can these problematic aspects be solved? given the historical and narrative nature of the literary anecdotes in the book of al-Dībāj; the study analyses problematic anecdotes through historical tracking, and the methods of narrative analysis, such as studying the characters and the transformations that occur in the anecdotes in different sources.

the study hopes, through its methodology, to present a new conception of approaching the problematic anecdotes in our literary heritage, and to ameliorate some of them.
