This research deals with one of the important controversial topics in the science of jurisprudence.

It is indispensable for everyone who practices ijtihad (juristic reasoning) within the scope of religious texts, as well as in matters of judiciary, fatwa and other matters.

The research includes an introduction, a preface, two sections, and a conclusion.

The introduction tackles the general reference, its meaning, types, and forms.

The first section includes the disagreement among scholars of fundamental jurisprudence over the general reference and its effect on rulings.

It also identifies the area of dispute, the doctrine of the majority, the doctrine of the Ḥanafī School, and comparing the two doctrines on this issue.

The second section touches on the effect of the disagreement among scholars about the general reference.

Scholars' disagreement about the general reference led to different rulings on minor jurisprudential issues such as the requirement to make the intention to fast Ramadan and the ruling on reciting the Fātiḩah (the opening chapter of the qur'an) in prayer.
