The study aimed to review local food price developments for some staple food commodities during the period 2000 to 2018.

it also aimed to identify the most important factors causing food price inflation, as well as presenting some proposals for its treatment.

the study used descriptive analysis and review of applied literature in identifying the most important factors that impacted food prices.

the factors were divided into two categories according to their origin; supply factors and demand factors.

the study found that some supply factors as agricultural productivity, agriculture arable land, agricultural labor and global food prices all have positively affected local food prices.

among demand factors that have positive relationships with the rise in food prices were; the parallel exchange rate, money supply, government expenditures and the increase in the population.

per capita income, which was represented by per capita GDP, has no significant relationship with food price changes, especially after the year 2011.

finally, the study concluded with some recommendations to solve the problem including reforming the agricultural sector to raise production and productivity, achieving self-sufficiency, and building strategic food reserves to face food supply shortages and price increases.
