The study was conducted for the Samawa desert area, which is located within the borders of Muthanna Governorate, because there is no real evaluation of previous studies for this area, where the total area of the study area reached 42042.72 Hectare The study aims to find out the relationship in normalized difference moisture index (NDMI) with the chemical and physical characteristics and to develop solutions and treatments by identifying the factors and indicators that have a direct relationship to desertification based on the use of geographic information systems.

Spatial distribution maps were drawn.

Some physical properties (soil texture, bulk density) and some chemical properties (electrical conductivity, reaction degree, organic matter, gypsum percentage, calcium carbonate, exchanged sodium ratio) were selected.

The silt content, clay content and bulk density with the NDMI moisture index showed an insignificant relationship.

As for the chemical properties, the relationship between electrical conductivity, reaction degree, organic matter, calcium carbonate and the ratio of sodium exchanged with moisture index was insignificant.

As for the gypsum content, a significant relationship was shown with the determination factor of 5 R.

It was noted that there was a significant relationship between the index of soil moisture distribution and the measured moisture in the field with a coefficient of determination R = 0.7, and it was found that there was no significant relationship between the index of the distribution of soil moisture and the temperature measured in the field with a coefficient of determination of R = 0.2.
