This research aims to identify the critical approach of Ibn Salam al-Jamhi in selecting the stallions of the pre-Islamic poets and the criteria he followed in determining the classes of poets, and the importance of the study is that, it paid attention and concentration to the pre-Islamic poets, and the classified of them above others in the same class.

It also discussed the concept of the veteran according to Ibn Salam, where he listed a number of veteran poets among the pre-Islamic poets in his classification, and this is not consistent with the definition of veteran in view of scholars, writers, critics and experts who know poets and their categories.

Another importance of the study is that, it dealt with the stages that the ancient Arabic poetry went through, during which it encountered periods of strength, activeness and prosperity, it also coincided with difficult in a period of time, during which it status declined, it strength and activeness weakened, and it fame diminished.

The study came out with several results including that; The criteria that Ibn Salam took in adding a poet to the classification of pre-Islamic poets are based on the poet being famous, it is also noticed that Ibn Salam’s classification of each poet is as a result of the choice of scholars and experts of poetry in placing the poet in a particular class, and that, classifying a poet with his peers in class is due to the similarity that Ibn Salam observed between his poem and that of his peers, and that, this similarity is related to the quality of the poetry and not its quantity.

The abundance of the poet’s poetry also takes precedence if all the poems of the poet are good, so, a good poet with many poems according to Ibn Salam is closer to the class of stallion poets than a poet with less poem.

A noticeable issue in the approach of Ibn Salam in the order of classification is that, he takes the stand of the majority of the people of Basra where he lived, and that was clear when he placed Imru’ulQois at the top of the first class, although the people of Kufa and Hijaz give precedence to another.

As for the approach that the study followed is the descriptive and analytical method, which is the appropriate for this study, where the researcher describes the patriarchal phenomenon, and through observation and follow-up, he analyses according to what the situation requires.
