In this research, a reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) analytical method has been developed and validated for the determination of five compounds that can be added to skin bleaching cosmetics.

These five compounds are: Hydroquinone, Prednisolone, Betamethasone Dipropionate, Mometasone Furoate, and Clobetasol Propionate.

Chromatographic separation of the studied compounds was achieved on a reverse phase C18 column using a mobile phase consisting of Ethanol: Water in the ratio of 55:45 v/v.

The mobile phase was pumped at a flow rate of 1 ml/min at 40°C, and the eluents was monitored at 255 nm.

The method was successfully validated in accordance to ICH guidelines acceptance criteria for (linearity, accuracy, precision, selectivity, limit of detection, limit of quantification).

All the validation parameters were within the acceptance range.

The proposed method was used for quantitative determination of the five compounds in bulk samples and semi-solid preparations and it was applied to 18 cosmetic products in order to determine the identity and quantity of the added compounds in those products.

Added compounds were detected in 5 of 18 products: Hydroquione was detected in 1 product (3.25%), Betamethasone Dipropionate was detected in 1 product (0.065%) and Clobetasol Propionate was detected in 3 products (0.031, 0.049,0.07 %).
