This research deals with the subject of the Prophetic method of joking.

The research explains the existence of two sets of people in regards to joking.

Many people view joking as a permissive behavior with no regulations and boundaries and no consideration for time or people receiving the joke.

Others have an exaggerated belief that joking reduces one’s status and prestige and is in conflict with Sharia and its provisions.

Through the descriptive-analytical approach, this research shows the meaning of joking and its legal ruling, the regulations of joking, and the wisdom of its legitimacy through the Prophet’s approach to joking.

The research concluded with a set of results, the most important of which stresses that joking, according to the Sharia regulations, has the rule of desirability.

The Prophet used joking in several rulings, including enlisting happiness, consoling, expressing love, and chasing away boredom.

In addition, joking is used for educational purposes to correct and discipline those who have offended and erred.

There is no contradiction between the hadiths that forbid joking and the hadiths that permit joking.

The hadiths that forbade joking should be taken into account if it is in violation of the Sharia rulings as well as those that permitted it and mandated it within the Sharia rulings.
