Language is a mean of communication and key to ethnic identity across time.

This article aims to investigate the role of etymology in deciphering ambiguity of some aspects of the primeval civilization of Sudan.

It interprets the figurative semantic concept of the word ”shendi" in the Dago language which is akin to heritage of Kingdom of Meroe.

The signifier and the signified are inquired based on image theory of meaning and methodology of semantic analysis.

The significance of this article emerges as it seeks to reconstruct the past of the city to contribute to and reinforce historical linguistic research and understanding.

It is found that the Dago language represents one of the most antique and valuable clues to unlock treasures of the Nilo-Saharan unexplored culture.

Tracing its proliferation from east to west requires undergoing further Studies to assist in drawing a wider picture of the diffusion of cultural elements from the Nile Valley into North and West Africa.

It concludes that the word “shendi ” in the Dago language implies ideological connotation with Amun deity of the antiquity.
