The health effects of low-dose ionizing radiation are important in many areas such as X-ray imaging, radiotherapy and nuclear power.

However, all current and potential medical and industrial applications are currently challenged by public fear about radiation and its risks and regulatory restrictions.

This article aims to evaluate the validity of the linear non-threshold (LNT) model, which is the basis of the current system of radiation protection.

It determines radiation damage at low doses and assumes that any radiation dose, no matter how small, is harmful.

There is no primary evidence of adverse health effects for doses below 100 mSv, and conversly, numerous laboratory and animal studies report beneficial effects of lower doses.

In general, although the LNT linear non-threshold model may not yet have been proven incorrect, it has certainly not been proven correctly.

Given the high price (in both economic and human terms) for LNT-inspired radiation protection programs, there is little doubt that the current regulatory burden should be reduced.
