Background and Aim: Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses with a prevalence of 16-20% and an incidence of 1.6%.

Its incidence increases if it is secondary to other physical diseases.

Depression may affects in all aspects of life, and it reflects negatively on the quality of life and patient compliance in treatment and even on the death rate, where it increases in depressive patients primarily due to suicide.

This study aims to detect the prevalence of depression in patients with ESRD who are treated with hemodialysis at Al-Mowasat University Hospital.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in department of nephrology in 2020 at Al- Mouwasat University Hospital in Damascus using demographic questionnaire and (DASS- 21) the scale of depression, anxiety and stress 21.

Results: The sample was 156 patients, of whom (57%) 89 male patients and (43%) 67 female patients.

The results produced a prevalence of mild depression (23.1%) and moderate depression (6.4%).

Where (70.5%) of the respondents obtained a normal result.

The prevalence rate among females was (47.8%) which was almost equal to that in men (52.2%) but the severity of depression in men was 1.5 times more prevalent than in women.

prevalence rate of depression increases by the increase in the number of HD sessions conducted per week where (52%) of depressive patients conducts 3 sessions\w compared to (47%) conducted two sessions\w.

Conclusion: Detection and treatment of depressive symptoms in the ESRD patients have a significant role in improving quality of life of these patients.
