This paper studies the geometric designs represented on the seals of Egypt and Mesopotamia in the Predynastic era.

During this period, seals were made of various materials including stone and metal and were covered with incised images or signs indicating ownership of the stamped objects by the holders of the seals.

In this sense, they were symbolic artefacts with symbolic signs representing and indicating differences in time and place and reflecting the culture and environment which seals belonged to.

As we shall see, during the period of this study elements and designs of the Egyptian seals were derived mainly and primarily from the Egyptian cultural context.

Moreover, we can notice some similarities and parallels between Egyptian inscriptions towards the end of the Naqada II and Mesopotamian seals, already known since the seventh millennium BCE.

However, this paper argues that despite these similarities, Egyptian seals were then beginning to reflect an identity of its own.
