In translating literature, challenges may give some translators a sense of achievement paired with an aesthetic flavour.

I have had that sense in many cases.

Here, with this project I have engaged myself in, I have felt something unique, more than ever.

I have to admit right from the beginning that translating Dilruba Z.

Ara’s short story, Detached Belonging, into Arabic was a challenge I have never ever encountered, with the exception, of course, of some cases in translating poetry.

The two words that constitute the title perplexed me.

Much to my surprise, the author, herself, told me that “trying to translate the title Detached Belonging can be very frustrating.

I was also stuck with it while trying to get the essence of the [title] in Swedish.” Therefore, one may claim that the experience of translating Detached Belonging is very challenging in many ways.

The topic and the themes set the story’s call for translators to take up such an exemplary job.

The text is an example of the narratives that choose to vocalize a profound loss of identity of immigrants living in the West.

Its plot and characters now and then highlight the evident incongruity between two very different cultures and pave the way for the author’s blatant critique of white supremacy.

The story showcases how third-world identity/ background/ appearance can be undervalued in the land of strangers and therefore subtly discriminated.

By so doing, the author provides a chance for audiences from various cultural backgrounds to get a postcolonial reading of a text packed with controversial themes.

The difficulties in translating this text also arise from the author’s pictorial depiction of her thoughts, the splendid prose that is dyed with elegance, and the richness and intensity of style that make her text an outstanding experience in translation.
