In building its theoretical conceptualizations, this research proceeds with the following consideration: the ego is, at the same time, unique and multiple.

This core idea covers, in an implicit manner, all of Marguerite Yourcenar’s fictional works.

On the one hand, it is considered unique in terms of it being the realistic validation of personal existence; on the other hand, it is considered multiple since it constitutes a philosophical awareness that is perceived as an interaction between the self and the variables belonging to the external world.

This self-conscious perception is what Yourcenar's fictional characters attempted to achieve through the consideration of the ego as the other, not in terms of its characteristic as a static and core existence based on certainty (descent, religion, homeland, gender...), but through approaching it as a continuous research governed by both processing and transformation, both of which are influenced by environmental factors, that is, by the network of connections established between the self and the other, the latter crosses, in fact, our identity and forms part of our being.

In reality, the main characters in Yourcenar's novels are aware of their beings and discover them from two different perspectives.

As a matter of fact, Adrian, Nathalian and Zinon explored their respective selves by resorting to their respective autobiography, that is to say, through reconsidering their past (i.e., their actions in relation to their interactions with others); meanwhile, Lazar explores its self by looking at the eventual possibilities that the future may offer and is putting ahead of him, those possibilities are based on the human patterns that he embodies on stage.
