Medieval translators chose the term quwwa to render the Greek dynamis since the two terms mean “strength, potency, power, force”.

Besides dynamis and quwwa were used as technical terms in Greek and Arabic philosophy.

Despite of the fact, they did not have only one meaning, but many according to authors and to the subject matter.

The article focuses on the meanings of the term quwwa intended by Ibn Bāğğa (Avempace, ca.

1085-1139) in three of his commentaries on Aristotle’s books On Coming-to-Be and Passing-Away, the Physics, and his treatises History of Animals, On the Parts of Animals and Generation of Animals put together into a Book of Animals in the Arabic tradition

Les traducteurs médiévaux en arabe ont choisi le terme ‘quwwa’ pour traduire le terme grec ‘dynamis’ puisque les deux termes signifient ‘force, puissance, en puissance’.

En outre, ‘dynamis’ et ‘quwwa’ étaient utilisés comme termes techniques dans la philosophie grecque et arabe, malgré le fait, qu’ils n'avaient pas un seul sens, mais plusieurs, selon les auteurs et le sujet.

L'article se concentre sur les significations du terme ‘quwwa’ chez Ibn Bagga (Avempace, 1085-1139) tel qu'il a été utilisé dans trois de ses commentaires sur les ouvrages d’Aristote : De la génération et la corruption, Physique, et les traités Histoire des animaux, Parties des animaux et Génération des animaux, regroupés dans un seul Livre sur les animaux dans la tradition arabe.
