الملخص EN

Objective : This study aims at investigating adjustment disorder presenting as anxiety and its relationship to stressor type, age, education, and marital status among Jordanian peacekeepers in United Nations mission in Liberia.

Method : Data were prospectively collected in the year 2007 from Jordanian soldiers who participated in the United Nations mission in Liberia.

Soldiers were screened after they had spent five months in the mission ; every soldier was interviewed individually using a semi structured interview schedule which was specially developed to fulfill the purpose of this study.

The interview ascertained demographic information, adaptation to new environment, and adjustments disorder symptoms and sources of stressors during the mission.

The Arabic version of Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale was introduced to every participant in order to find out the severity of anxiety they experienced.

The scale has showed acceptable validity and reliability.

Results : The study group consisted of 111 Jordanian soldiers who were assessed and found to be mentally fit and who agreed to take part in this study.

All of the participants were males ; their age ranged between 20 and 49 years, and had various levels of education.

Results revealed that the highest rating stressors were ‘being far in new geographical environment’ and the ‘duration of the mission’.

The lowest rating stressors were ‘communication with families’ and ‘risk of infectious diseases’.

None of the participants showed significant depressive symptoms or other psychiatric disorders a part of anxiety features, which indicated that the participants did not suffer from adjustment disorder of the depressive or mixed types.

According to the Zung Anxiety scale results showed that 58 (52.3%) had normal range of anxiety (scored below 44), and 44 (39.6%) had mild to moderate range of anxiety (scored 45-59), while nine (8.1%) had severe anxiety (scored 60-74).

The results also showed a significant relationship between severity of anxiety and younger age group.

No significant relationships between severity of anxiety and educational background, or marital status were found.

Conclusion : Some Jordanian peacekeepers in the United Nations missions developed anxiety due to variable sources of stress in the mission area.

The younger the age groups the more they developed anxiety.
