The objective of this study is to define the economic position of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia based on the economic study criteria through scrutiny of the researcher’s assumption, i.e.

promotion of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the status of economically advanced countries, with help from some demographic and economic standards as dictated by the study requirements since such standards have an impact on and are affected by the economic criteria.

Focus on classification of countries on the basis of economy is more viable because any state’s policies and problems in times of peace and war are closely linked to its economic circumstances, interests and relations with the others.

The question that poses itself is: with all the development achieved in its various economic sectors, is the Kingdom still classified in the camp of developing countries or is it possible to promote it to the developed countries club? To achieve the objective of this study, which is.verification of this assumption, the research will begin by identifying the fundamental concepts of economic development, their importance and objectives, followed by review of the development of the Kingdom’s economic resources.

This will be coupled with application of the study criteria and comparison with other countries, such as the United States, as an example of a developed high income country, the six GCC (petroleum) countries whose economies are similar to the region of the study in terms of their geographical association and dependence on petroleum as a source of revenues, and Malaysia, as an example of upper middle income less developed country similar to the region of the study in terms of the World Bank classification which is based on the per capita share in the national income and the number of population.
