الملخص الإنجليزي

This is a contrastive study of the grammatical category of gender in English and Arabic. Gender in English is natural.

It is divided into four major classes, namely; (1) masculine (2) feminine (3) neuteral and (4) common.

Gender in Arabic on the other hand is grammatical.

The classification of a noun into masculine and feminine is determined by the syntax and morphology of the language.

Having said that, the division into this category or that is not always a black and white two term contrast. Shakespeare in Hamlet for instance describes the beauty of Ophelia as that of the sun, and yet in ، Shall I compare thee to summer's day's', Shakespeare talks of the sun, albeit figuratively as he when he says: ' sometimes to hot the eye of heaven shines and oft' is his complexion dimmed.

(Emphasis added) In Arabic the Holy Quran abounds with examples whereby a word to the masculine on one occasion and to feminine on anther Consider: قوله تعالى (( قل هذه سبيلي)) 108/ سورة يوسف " say, this is my way" قوله تعالى (( وإِن يروا سبيل الرشد لا يتخذوه سبيلا، وإِن يروا سبيل الغي يتخذوه سبيلا )) 146 / الأعراف " and if they see every sign, they will not believe in it, and if they see the way of rectitude the do not take it for a way " Fascinating this, though it may be, it only serves to highlight the complexity and intractability of the issue at hand.
