The effect of β-glucanase inclusion in sorghum based diet on growth performance of broiler chicks

Experiment was conducted to study the effect of commercial enzyme 1,4 B-glucanase (Burgzyme C) on broiler performance and blood parameter.

A total of 132 one day old Ross broiler chicks were used in this study, in complete randomized design.

Birds were distributed into three groups (44 birds) with 4 replicates (11 birds / replicate).

Three experimental diets were formulated to be isonenergtic and isonitrogenous.

Using three levels of enzyme, diet A (0.0 g / kg), diet B (0.125 g / kg) and diet C (0.25 g / kg).

The parameters measured were feed intake, body weight, feed conversion ,dressing percentage, relative weight of internal organs and some blood parameters cholesterol, glucose and total protein.

The results indicated that inclusion of the β-glucanase enzyme significantly (P < 0.05) improved weight gain and feed conversion of broiler chicks.

Β-glucanases supplemented diet had no effect on dressing percentage.

However, weight of abdominal fat and weight of internal organs (liver, spleen, gizzard and intestine) were significantly decreased (P < 0.05) affected by enzyme.

Enzyme supplemented diet had no effect on glucose and total protein but had significantly (P < 0.05) decreased serum cholesterol.
