Shari a Law organizes all aspects of the life of a Muslim.

It has rules and regulations about almost everything and there are also different types of punishments for those who transgress.

Some of the penalties for transgressors are clearly and explicitly prescribed by the Koran or the Sunna but others are left to the discretion of the Muslim ruler or judge.

This dissertation is about one of the prescribed penalties; namely the one Muslim jurists call Hadd Al Haraba.

Hadd Al Haraba is any criminal act that endangers the lives of Muslims or Dhimmis or results in a loss of life or property.

Acts of terrorism and highway robbery are too examples of crimes where the punishment called Hadd Al Haraba should be meted out.

Allah says in the Koran : (( The punishment of those who wage war against God and His Apostle, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite side, Or exile from the land: That is their disgrace In this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter)) Surrah Al Maidah Verse 33.

The dissertation tries to show the importance of enforcing the Shari a Law.

It also lists some of the benefits which will be gained by any society that enforces Shari a Law.

 It also calls for the protection of society against those who commit crimes so that people can live safely.

 It shows the flexibility and tolerance that characterizes the Shari a.

It shows that Shari a calls for tolerance of other religions.

In early Islamic societies Muslims and non- Muslims co-existed peacefully and co-operated to produce one of the greatest civilizations.

It shows the steps that can be taken by the Muslim ruler to nip crime in the bud before it gets out of hand.

It calls for the co-operation of all in the fight against crime and criminals.

This co-operation is in fact a religious duty because all Muslims must eschew evil and enjoin good.
