الملخص الإنجليزي

This is a comparative study of private and governmental schools.

It aims at investigating the effect of some socio-cultural factors on Sudanese secondary school students’ writing.

Such factors include students’ home background، economical condition and access to English apart from the curriculum.

To do so, the researcher has asked three questions concerning the nature of these socio-cultural factors, their impact on the students and the ways we can utilize them to improve students' writing.

To answer these questions, five assumptions have been raised: first, there is a significant difference between the writing of the students who join governmental schools and those who join private schools.

Second, there is a significant difference between the writing of the students who receive private tuition and those who do not receive any private tuition.

Third, there is a significant difference between the writing of the students who have access to English apart from the school syllabus and those who do not.

Fourth, there is a significant difference between the writing of the students who belong to families of higher income and those who belong to families of lower income.

Fifth, there is a significant difference between the writing of the students who belong to educated families and those who belong to uneducated ones. The study includes five chapters; and they respectively focus on the overall plan of the study, the theoretical framework, the methodology, data analysis and discussion and the findings recommendations. The main findings of the study are as follows : 1- Parent’s education as well as their income have an influential role in students’ achievement in English. 2-It is revealed that practicing of extra activities in English outside the class or the curriculum enhances students’ performance in it.

3- The state schools students have performed better in the writing test than those who join private schools.

The researcher recommends the following : 1- The skill of writing should be given its due importance.

The textbooks should contain sufficient exercises of writing so as to strengthen students’ writing ability. 2- Parents and teachers should motivate students to practice additional activities in the language.
