The aim of this study is to identify the effect of a number of variables on changing an academic specialization through answering the following four questions: 1.

What are the main causes of changing an academic specialization at the Hashemite University ? 2.

What is the effect of the difference in sex as to the causes of changing an academic specialization? 3.

What is the effect of the difference in the type of university acceptance on the causes of changing an academic specialization? 4.

What is the effect of the difference in the General Secondary School Certificate score on the causes of changing an academic specialization ? To achieve the aim of the study, the researcher developed a questionnaire and distributed it among the 108 students who changed their majors from the beginning of the academic year 1995/1996 to the end of the academic year 1996/1997.

Ninty two male and female students fully completed and returned the questionnaire .

The results of the study revealed that the main reasons for changing majors were: The inappropriateness of my previous major to my readiness, my interest in the new major, weak motivation to study the previous major, lack of interest in the previous major, low grade-point average, great academic burdens in the previous major, and the difficulty of the previous major.

On the other nand, the results of the study showed that the most important reasons for changing majors were academic, followed by economic reasons, and finally, social ones.

Also, the results of the study revealed no significant statistical differences in the means of causes of changing majors attributed to sex, or the General Secondary School Certificate score.

But there were significant differences due to the type of university acceptance in the field of academic reasons only.
