الملخص الإنجليزي

This research was carried out to determine bacterial contamination of skin care products used for neonates and children.

Focusing on specified bacteria that may cause skin and eye infections such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus which should not be present in such products.

One hundred and twenty skin care products randomly purchased in 2009 from retail outlets throughout local Sudanese markets .They were examined bacteriologically by cultivation on suitable selective culture media using streaking method and identified by microscopical examination, staining reactions and biochemical tests.

Viable aerobic bacteria were not recovered from 38 samples (31.6 %).While 82 samples (68.

3 %) out of 120 samples examined were found bacteriologically contaminated; including 45 talc powders, 39 lotions, 23 oils, 9 shampoos, 2 petroleum jellies and 2 baby baths.

The most frequently recovered bacteria were Bacillus spp.

which were isolated from 51 samples (42.5 %), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from 16 samples (13.3 %), Staphylococcus aureus isolated from 4 samples (3.3 %), Coagulase negative Staphylococci isolated from 3 samples (2.5 %), Gram negative rods isolated from 4 samples (3.3 %), a mixture of Gram positive and Gram negative rods isolated from 3 samples (2.5 %) and only one sample was found contaminated by E.coli (0.83 %).

Fortunately no Salmonella was isolated from tested samples. The incidences of contamination vary between items.

Talc powder was found to be more contaminated .39 out of 45 samples (86.6 %) were found to be contaminated.

Bacillus spp.

is the predominant bacteria isolated from 33 samples (73.

3 %) , Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from 2 samples (4.4 %).Staphylococcus aureus isolated from 3 samples (6.7 %) and coagulase negative Staphylococci isolated from one sample (2.

2 %).

26 lotions out of 39 (66.6 %) samples studied were found to be contaminated, Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from 12 samples (30.7%).

Six samples were found to be contaminated by Bacillus spp.

(15.3 %).

Three samples (7.6 %) by Gram negative rods , three samples (7.6 %) by a mixture of Gram negative rods and Gram positive rods (Bacillus spp.) .One sample (2.6 %) by Staphylococcus aureus and one sample (2.6 %) by coagulase negative Staphylococcus spp. 13 out of 23 oils (56.6 %) were found to be contaminated.

Bacillus spp.

isolated from 11 samples (47.8 %).

One sample (4.3 %) was found to be contaminated by coagulase negative Staphylococci and one sample (4.3 %) by Gram negative rods. Two samples of shampoos were found to be contaminated by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22.2 %).One sample was found to be contaminated by E.coli (11.

1 %) out of nine samples tested. Only one sample of petroleum jellies out of two samples tested was found to be contaminated by Bacillus spp.

while no bacteria was isolated from the two samples of baby baths have been tested.
