الملخص العربي

هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى استقصاء رأي طلبة الدراسات العليا حول أهمية و فعالية اختبار التوفل و مساقاته، و ذلك من خلال جمع البيانات من أجل الإجابة على الأسئلة الآتية : ١.ما آراء طلبة الدراسات العليا حول أهمية و فعالية اختبار التوفل ؟ ٢.ما آراء طلبة الدراسات العليا حول أهمية و فاعلية مساقات التوفل ؟ ٣.

هل هناك فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية عند مستوى (a = 0.05) في رأي طلبة الدراسات العليا حول أهمية و فاعلية مساقات التوفل تعزى لمتغير الجنس ؟ ٤.

هل هناك فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية عند مستوى (a = 0.05) بين طلبة الدراسات العليا حول اقتراحات و طرق التقييم المفضلة المتعلقة بمساقات التوفل تعزى لمتغير الجنس ؟ ولتحقيق أهداف الدراسة استعملت الباحثة المقابلة كدراسة استطلاعية للمشكلة.

و تم بناء الاستبانة مكونة من ٣٠ فقرة وزعت على جزأين.

تم توزيع الاستبانة على عينة عشوائية مكونة من ٢٠٠ طالبا و طالبة في برنامج الدراسات العليا في جامعة اليرموك، حيث تم استلام (١٨٦) استبانة.

طبقت الأداة على أفراد عينة الدراسة و بعد جمع البيانات و استخدام التحليلات الإحصائية المناسبة أظهرت النتائج ما يأتي : 1.

يتسم طلبة الدراسات العليا في جامعة اليرموك بالضعف العام في مهارات اللغة الإنجليزية (القراءة، و الكتابة، و الاستماع، و المحادثة) و بشكل خاص في مهارة الاستماع و الاستيعاب ؛ لأن معظم طلبة الدراسات العليا فشلوا في هذا الجزء من الاختبار، إذ يحتاج طلبة الدراسات العليا إلى إعداد جيد لامتحان التوفل من خلال التدريب على عناصر اللغة الإنجليزية.

٢ يعتقد طلبة الدراسات العليا في جامعة اليرموك أن مساقات التوفل غير مهمة و فعالة، و لا تفي بالغرض الذي وضعت من أجله، و أنها بحاجة إلى تعديل لتتناسب و حاجات الطلاب.

إنها لا ترتبط بتخصصاتهم مما أضعف مهارتهم في استخدامها كأداة للبحث العلمي، و استخدام اللغة الإنجليزية في حياتهم اليومية.

أظهرت النتائج أيضاً أن الطالبات أفضل من الذكور في مهارتي القراءة و الكتابة و أن الطلبة من كلا الجنسين بدا الضعف عليه في مهارتي الاستماع و المحادثة، و هم بحاجة لتطوير مهارات اللغة الإنجليزية لديهم.

لا توجد فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية، دلالة تعزى لمتغير الجنس.

أما فيما يتعلق برأي طلبة الدراسات العليا حول أهمية و فاعلية مساقات التوفل، يتفق كلا الجنسين على أن مساقات التوفل ليست فعالة في تطوير مهارات اللغة الإنجليزية لهم، و لم تحقق أهدافها التي وضعت من أجلها.

لا توجد فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية بين طلبة الدراسات العليا حول اقتراحات التقييم المفضلة لديهم و طرقها المتعلقة بمساقات التوفل تعزى لمتغير الجنس.

كان اقترح طلبة الدراسات العليا في جامعة اليرموك يستند إلى تصميم مساق لغة إنجليزية يلبي احتياجاتهم اللغوية، و يعالج نقاط ضعفهم المرتبطة بتخصصاتهم المختلفة.

الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed at investigating the opinions of graduate students’ about the importance and effectiveness of TOEFL and its courses through the data collected in order to answer the following questions: 1.

What are the graduate students’ opinions about the importance and effectiveness of TOEFL? 2.

What are the graduate students’ opinions about the importance and effectiveness of TOEFL courses? 3.

Are there any significant differences between the male and female graduate students’ opinions about the importance and effectiveness of TOEFL courses that can be attributed to gender? 4.

Are there any significant differences between the male and female graduate students’ suggestions and preferred methods of assessment of TOEFL courses that can be attributed to gender? To achieve the study goals the researcher used an interview as a pilot study to reveal the importance of the problem and to design the questionnaire which consisted of 30 items divided into two dimensions.

The questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of 200 male and female graduate students in graduate studies programs at Yarmouk University, of which 186 were completed and returned for statistical analysis.

The results revealed the following: 1.

Yarmouk University graduate students' English language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) are poor, particularly their listening and comprehension skills, as most graduate students failed this section of the TOEFL.

Graduate students need to be prepared to take the TOEFL through practicing English language skills.

2.

Neither male nor female graduate students at Yarmouk University thought that TOEFL courses were effective, important, or met their goals; there was overall agreement that they needed modification since they were not perceived as effective in teaching English language skills nor in enabling them to use the language either as a tool for scientific research or in their daily life.

Although the females were better than the males in reading and writing, both groups were poor in listening and speaking and needed to take TOEFL courses to improve the standard of their English language skills.

There were no significant differences between the male and female graduate students' opinions about the importance and effectivness of TOEFL courses, both groups agreed that TOEFL courses were not effective in improving their English language skills and therefore did not meet their goals.

4.

There were no significant differences between male and female graduate students' opinions of TOEFL courses or preferred methods of assessment that could be attributed to gender.

Both female and male participants suggested that a general English course should be designed based on graduate students’ linguistic needs and relevant to their different fields of study.
