Confession evidence, which is a detailed statement by the suspect admitting all facts necessary for conviction of a crime, is the most relied upon type of evidence by criminal justice agencies all over the world in convicting the defendant.

However, experience has shown that innocent people could confess to crimes they did not commit.

Hence, this study has sought to highlight the role that false confessions have played in the occurrence of wrongful convictions, and the reasons that lead innocent people to confess to crimes they did not commit.

It has shown that false confessions represent one of the main causes of wrongful convictions, and, hence, criminal justice systems have, in order to prevent the occurrence of wrongful convictions based on false confessions, to adopt certain rules designed to prevent the occurrence of false confessions, or, at least, guarantee their discovery if they occur.
