Polycystic ovary syndrome affects 6-7% of reproductive-aged women, making it the most common endocrine disorder in this population.

It is characterized by chronic an ovulation and hyperandrogenism.

Affected women may present with reproductive problem manifestations such as irregular menses or infertility, or cutaneous manifestations, including hirsutism and acne.

There are many hormones related to PCOS and one of them is sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), it is a glycoprotein that produced by hepatocytes and secreted into the blood then it binds androgens and estrogens with high affinity.

The aim of this research is to study the levels of sex hormone binding globulin in PCOS women and determine its relation to other markers that exists in this syndrome, in both groups PCOS and control women, and study the ability of use SHBG as a surrogate marker of insulin resistance in PCOS.

Fasting blood samples were collected from 70 women with PCOS and 30 controls.

Samples were analyzed for FSH, LH, SHBG, free testosterone, glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance was calculated by the homeostasis model assessment method (HOMA-IR).

As conclusion, this study shows that for patients with PCOS, SHBG is an integrated marker of insulin resistance that may be of use to identify insulin-resistant individuals for targeted treatment with insulin-sensitizing agents.
