The emergence of the concept of sustainability in the late 1980’s, to be followed by the issue of the first Human Development Report by the UNDP in 1990, presented both a major challenge and opportunity to the media at large.

The challenge was posed by the need to leverage the media to make it worthy of ascending to the level of SHD approach in terms of its comprehensive coverage and depth.

At the same time, taking advantage of the opportunity to refine the role and structure of the media as to make it effective and responsive to socio-economic, political and cultural needs of society.

This approach no doubt would raise the question regarding identifying the mutual roots aiming at reconciliation between the two approaches.

Based on a selective review of some distinguished research work, the search path took the shape of formulating a “proposed theoretical vision” acting as a framework for delivering the task.

In conclusion, the consensus is clear that, adopting SHD thesis with all its humanitarian and moral contents, the media would greatly benefit from the outcome.

With such association, the media would no doubt have found its guiding “incubator”, hence the opportunity to make a decisive leap forward in the presently commanding Age of Information.
