الملخص الإنجليزي

This study was conducted to measure the level of familiarity with a selected and a representative sample of highly recurrent vocabulary and terminology items on contemporary political affairs and conflicts in the Middle East.

These items have achieved high levels of frequency on major television networks broadcasting in English, particularly CNN, BBCW, and Al-Jazeera International.

Many of these items reflected and favored the ideologies and the interests of the dominant political establishments in the leading English-speaking countries.

A sample consisting of sixty teachers of English from schools in the Governorate of Al-Karak, and graduate students of English and applied linguistics from Mu'tah University provided the data that were used to answer the research questions of this study.

The data were collected through A Likert-type questionnaire and a vocabulary definition test that were designed for this purpose.

The study attempted to explore the effect(s) of the gender variable, and the amount of time spent by members of the sample watching English television channels on their levels of familiarity with this type of vocabulary and terminology.

The mean score achieved on the test by the study sample was 27.58 out of 114, which means that the level of familiarity with the vocabulary and terminology items among the study sample was way below the 50% level and was therefore considered significantly low.

The study provides several recommendations for the English Department at Mu'tah University and for English instructors at the schools of Al-Karak and at Mu'tah University.
