Background: The role of inflammatory process in atherosclerosis injury that gets in patients with infarction has been proven, where many inflammatory factors interfere in the process of vascular inflammation, and that leads to damage to the endothelium, which is an early event in the process of atherosclerosis.

YKL-40, an inflammatory glycoprotein stimulates chemotaxis, cell attachment and migration, and tissue remodelling.

Our objective was to show the importance of YKL-40 protein in patients with myocardial infarction, and study the relationship between YKL-40 and HS-CRP.

The study included 36 infarction patients (18 patients treated with thrombolytic and 18 patients not treated with thrombolytic) in addition to 24 healthy people.

Serum YKL-40 and HS-CRP were measured using ELISA assay.

The study showed a significant increase in YKL-40 values in patients with infarction, compared to the control group.

The mean values of YKL-40 were 231, 66 g/l, respectively.

The highest values were observed for YKL-40 in patients with infarction treated with thrombolytics, compared with infarction patients not treated with it (P=0.0001).

It also showed a significant correlation between YKL-40 and HS-CRP and a lack of relationship with CK-MB in infarction patients, whether treated with thrombolysis or not.

As conclusion, this study showed a relationship between YKL-40 protein and acute myocardial infarction.
