This research aims to study some of the compositional patterns of idiomatic expression and determine the degree of fossilization in ii and levels of flexibility which are found in one or more of its elements.

Idiomatic expression is a form of collocations in the Arabic language which of them as well as are contextual expressions and compound words, and is one of the means used by the language for the development of its verbal wealth to meet the requirements of the expression of the growing achievements of civilization.

Idiomatsc expression here is meant to be "a consistent pattern of expressions belongs to a particular language” characterized by consistency and consists of more than one word providing no clear complete meaning, though with the prominence of the entire words constituting it such as: a storm in a teacup.

The importance of the research attributes to the littleness of researches investigated idiomatic expressions, especially in the contemporary Arabic language as well as the study of idiomatic expressions represent, in its semantic side, a great importance to manipulate the Arabic language automatically.

These expressions provide numerous difficulties for automatic understanding systems.

As for the research sample, it is represented in the idiomatic expressions that have been collected from "The Basic Arabic Lexicon".

This lexicon has been selected to be a source of the studied sample and for the plentifulness of its idioms with the focus on what is used in the contemporary Arabic supported with an explanation of their meaning and the contexts of use.
