الملخص الإنجليزي

This dissertation is concerned with the study of the ‹Discourse of Madness in the Arab heritage›.

Due to the polysemy of the word ‹discourse› as a complex epistemological term variably used in scientific, social, philosophical and linguistic disciplines, this study is keen to determine the purpose of its use in two dimensions: its philosophical intersection with the concept of «the intellect» and its relation to the meaning of madness in the absence of what is intuitive, relative, or variant.

Thus, philosophers have associated discourse with ‹the intellect› and related what is ‹discoursal› with what is ‹intellectual›.

This association evokes the «intellect» as an effective, cognitive and epistemological tool that bespeaks madness, yet is bespoken of as ‹mad›.

In addition, the critical endeavors of Michel Foucault (1926 –1984) that extend discourse analysis from the boundaries of linguistics, sociolinguistics, and pragmatics to fields related to cultural systems which produce knowledge and its future trends, and exercises its hegemony and concepts.

Discourse is an area of interest and practice manifested in specific forms of coherence and association of notions.

Therefore, discourse in this study is defined as a method whereby ‹madness› in Arabic heritage has been commonly represented.

Commonly represented discourses are meant to be the official and formally stated description of madness in Arabic disciplines of knowledge in those authorities who have the right to speak about the other/the marginal, in the belief that they have adequate truth and amble knowledge to judge them according to their cultural systems.

In other words, the term ‹discourse› is operationally defined as a genre of epistemology.

A combination of verbal representations of this ‘madness’ concept as involving a variety of presuppositions, expectations, interpretations and exegeses has been discussed in a plethora of the written literature of Arabic heritage at the level of language, philosophy, jurisdiction, and literary prose.

The aim is to displace and isolate the discourse of madness from that of the intellect.

However, madness is not the antitheses of the intellect only, but is also predisposed as an ideation parallel to a «mind» that is demented or labeled as such, within a variety of descriptors according the literature and semiotics of Arabic culture.

This study has been set in an introduction, six chapters and conclusion.

Chapters one and two have been dedicated conceptualizations of the intellect and madness, both of which have been introduced as purely cultural terms.

Chapters three and four describe two perceptive cultural systems that provide the reader with necessary concepts and expertise to process the meaning of madness, namely, language and programmatic.

Chapters five and six present a discussion of cultural practices of Madness Discourse in two important fields of global culture, i.e., jurisdiction and literature.

The investigation in each of these chapters has borne out significant partial findings which, in total, are conducive to a general cultural principle which is generally endorsed by cultural processing of the concepts of ‘madness’ and ‘mad’ and their referents.

This can be succinctly expressed in the following cultural dictum: “Madness is physically present but culturally absent in Arabic discourse.”.
