Background& Objective: to investigate the effect of Pelargonium odoratissimum ethanolic extract (POEE) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.

Materials & Methods: first, diabetes mellitus was induced in rats by injection of Alloxan (200 mg/ kg).

Afterwards, the diabetic rats were divided into groups in which they were injected by three doses of ethanolic extract (300, 600, 1000 mg/kg).

there were also two additional groups given the standard oral hypoglycemic agents: Glibenclamid and Metformine as references to evaluate the effect of the extract.

Indeed, in another set of experiments, the effect of the previous extract was studied on oral glucose tolerance test with comparison to Glibenclamid.

Results: The extract, especially with doses 600 and 1000 mg/ dl, significantly reduced the glucose level from the 2nd hours towards the 3rd and 4th hours following the injection, and this effect was dosedependent.

The effect of extract at dose 1000 mg/ dl was similar to that of Glibenclamid.

However, the effect of Metformine was more effective.

In oral glucose tolerance test, the extract (1000 mg/ dl) obviously enhanced the glucose tolerance in rats and again it was like Glibenclamid.

Conclusion: The POEE has clear hypoglycemic effect but it should be further investigated and the active ingredients must be identified
