Background & Objective: Multiple sclerosis progress in different patterns.

It is divided to relapsing remitting, secondary progressive, primary progressive and progressive with relapses types.

Our study concentrates on studying these different patterns in our area.

Materials & Methods: Cross-sectional cohort study of the patients attending the outpatient or the inpatient in the neurological department at the Mouassat Teaching Hospital in Damascus, Syria.

We collected 185 cases meet the revised McDonald diagnostic criteria between 2001 and 2006.

Then all the patients were classified according to their age and sex and all were followed for several years to monitor their progression.

Our results were compared with the international results.

Results: Our study has shown that the percentage of involvement in the relapsing remitting and secondary progressive types was 92% which is similar to the international studies.

While the progressive types account for 8% which is slightly less than the finding in the international studies.

Female: male ratio was 2:1 in the relapsing remitting and secondary progressive types while in the progressive types, male dominance was clear.

These findings were compatible with the international results Conclusion: We conclude that the patterns of progression of multiple sclerosis in Syria are similar to the international studies except the progressive types which were relatively less in Syria.

Sex distribution was identical to the international studies.
