Background & Objective: Decreasing serum lipids is still blocked by chemical drugs which have many side effects, and to achieve a safe medicine, this study aims to investigate the act of aqueous extracts of dried and fresh Zingiber officinale roscoe at tow doses on the levels of total cholesterol, HDL high-density cholesterol, LDL low-density cholesterol, and TG triglycerides in rat with hypercholesterolemia, resulting from hypothyroidism, caused by propyltheouracil PTU.

Materials & Methods: Rats were divided into 8 groups of control natural and patient groups, groups that were treated with aqueous extracts of fresh and dried ginger at doses of 300 and 500mg/kg orally, and groups that have been treated with atorvstatin at therapeutic dose, and half of the therapeutic dose orally, accompanied with fresh ginger extract at dose of 500 mg / kg.

After 30 days samples were collected, to compare all groups with the natural and the control groups, differences were recorded between the act of each of dried extracts and fresh extracts, dose-depended action was also studied using Mann-Whitney U test, p<0.05.

Results: It revealed a decrease in the total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein in the serum of rats treated by aqueous extracts of fresh and dried ginger, at doses 300, 500 mg / kg substantially at both doses, compared with the control of ill group, previous extracts were also able to cause reduction in lowdensity lipoprotein to similar levels comparable to natural levels in the first group and that was the same effect of atorvstatin in dose of 10 mg / day.

Synergistic effect was clear between the act of aqueous extracts of fresh ginger at dose of 500 mg / kg and atorvastatin, where the levels of both total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein in the animals that received atorvstatin in half of the therapeutic dose coupled with a ginger extracts was almost equal to levels in animals that received atorvstatin alone, also it did not observe dose-dependent action for the two doses of 300, 500 mg / kg , but the effect size was more in the higher dose, and it did not register differences between the action of fresh and dried ginger.

Conclusion: ginger extracts show a clear lowering effectiveness on total cholesterol and lipoproteins in rats .
